Detailed description of Aviara Golf Club

Aviara Golf Club is a Resort 18 hole golf course located in Carlsbad, California.

The Aviara golf course opened in 1991. The course was designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay.

Aviara Golf Club offers great scenery, excellent conditions, and a fair amount of difficulty. The difficulty comes from the many uphill and downhill shots caused by the many changes in elevation. In addition, the natural vegetation that lines the fairways will add strokes to anyone who strays that way. The undulating greens are very large, fast, and extremely difficult to read. Several tee boxes and greens are elevated. The fairways are fairly wide open, but there is still a definite advantage in keeping your shots straight. Water hazards come into play on six holes.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees the course plays to 7007 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5007 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 17, a par-5 that plays to 585 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 3, a par-3 that plays to 149 yards from the back tees. This is also one of the prettiest holes. It requires a tee shot to a green that is protected by water in the front and sand bunkers in the back. This green is very difficult to two putt, particularly if the tee is back left.

Watch out for # 5, a 543 yard par-5 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Aviara Golf Club is # 11, a 189 yard par-3.

Played Aviara on an SCGA Member Outing for the price of $130. Normally this course is too expensive for me with rates from $180 to about $230. Excellent Arnold Palmer layout with perfect greens, nice bunkers, lots of elevation changes, and plenty of water. The par threes are superb with 3 of them showcasing some beautiful water features. Water also come into play on about 3 or 4 other holes. The greens can be fast and tricky as they often have subtle mounds and many seem to slope from the front to the back. The fairways are generous but trouble lurks not far off the closely mowed turf. Would play it much more often if the price were around $100. Oh, and a great round can be ruined by the very tough 18th hole!

Some of the greens still had sand on them. Tee boxes were just punched but overall the course was in great condition. Undulating greens makes this a lousy putters worst nightmare.

This is a high-end resort course, and has all the amenities of such - excellent and attentive/friendly staff, good range, nice food and beverage service. The course challenge is easily attenuated by choice of tees played - greens are a challenge to solve. Good ambiance as well. It definitely is a premium-priced course, though, which will likely mean this one will be played on rare occasion. Did enjoy it, however.

Beautiful course with nice amenities. Gourmet coffee and tasty pastries were complimentary at start. Excellent briefing by starter. Beverages offered throughout the course. Outstanding turkey sandwiches and beer available for purchase at the #9 green($20 total). Freshly baked complimentary cookies at finish. Nice Pro Shop. A very nice experience. Was still in excellent shape after LPGA tournament.

I like the course. It is in excellent condition and the pace of play was maintained by the Marshall (he made a group ahead of us skip a hole because they fell too far behind). The course is expensive and a bit overpriced considering all the other excellent courses in the San Diego area.

We really enjoy playing this course. While it's pricey, we joined their "A Club" so that reduces the price somewhat. The grounds maintenance is excellent, and the many flowers and water features are beautiful. Green are quite fast (10-11 on most days) and in excellent condition. Fairways could use a bit more water in the hot months. Pro shop personnel, starters, and marshals are all very pleasant and helpful. The biggest improvement would be to lower the astronomical food prices at the concession stand.

Really nice course in fantastic shape. Never crowded, Four Seasons resort quality customer service. There is not a particularly good clubhouse/restaurant/bar right at the golf course, which is a drawback for me. It's not a place I would hang around to have a beer after the round (and that says a lot for me!). Plus it seems like it's almost always foggy. It is really expensive and they are NOT flexible about pricing. No replays. even the super twilight rate is something over $120 and I don't think that starts until like 4pm in the summer. However, there are other courses in the area that are comparable in price but are nowhere near as nice of a golf course (see La Costa Resort). For the pure on course golfing experience, this place is a decent value. If you are the kind of person who is willing to spend $230+ for a round of golf at a nice place, you won't feel cheated here.

This course is magnificent. Arnold Palmer loves moguls and bunkers the size of Rhode Island. If you don't hit it dead nuts (I don't) bring lots of balls. Also, it would be nice to have Steve Williams or Bones McKay reading greens for you. The staff is incredible; they implore the Four Seasons customer satisfaction training that is above peer. Most resort courses are benign; this one is the teeth of the dragon. But, hey, it's San Diego. GOD must have a home in San Diego somewhere.
